Spring has finally arrived, and for truckers who spend days or weeks at a time on the road, it provides the perfect opportunity to shake things up in their cabs and make sure they are fully prepared for what's coming.
Now that you don't need that cold-weather gear or tire chains, you should swap out that stuff for the items you'll need as spring wears on — and April showers provide their own challenges. The following are a few pieces of gear you'll need to stay successful on the road this spring:
1) A new emergency kit
While there are probably plenty of items in your old emergency kit that you don't have to replace, there are others that might need to be swapped out, according to Dynamic Transit. Anything with an expiration date should be examined, whether that's medicine in your first-aid kit, nonperishable food, batteries or even bottled water. Just get a better sense of what's good to go for the next few months, and what needs to be replaced.
2) The right clothes for the weather
Now that it's not below freezing every night, you can probably leave your heavy winter coats, sweaters and so on back home, Dynamic Transit said. However, you should keep in mind that spring weather is highly unpredictable — in many parts of the U.S., it can be 40 degrees one day and 60 the next, or sometimes both in the same day. As such, you need versatile clothing that provides the right level of comfort no matter what it's like outside.
3) Water-resistant footwear
April showers are the norm in spring, and you don't want to get stuck with damp shoes and socks because you didn't have the right footwear in your cab, according to CDL Life. Break out your reliable rain boots (or any other waterproof shoes you may have) and make sure they're in good shape. If not, buy a new pair that will be ready to stand up to any weather. There's no telling when you'll need to put them on.
4) A bright and shiny raincoat
Truckers need to be both fully protected from the elements and highly visible in many situations, CDL Life advised. As such, investing in a high-quality, fully waterproofed raincoat that's a bright color and has reflective parts can be the exact right kind of clothing you need as the spring continues. Find something that fits well, looks good and will fully protect you in even the most torrential of downpours.
5) New toiletries
Finally, if you're going to be on the road a lot this spring, you'll want to stock up on all the toiletries you need to look and feel your best in your life on the road, according to America Truck Driving School. Toothpaste, a new toothbrush, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner and more will all be vital. Stocking up now will prevent you from the risk of running out when you least expect it.
